THE DILEMMA OF A GHOST

Ghana’s leading performer of the ten-stringed harp-lute seprewa, Osei Korankye, joins Border Crossings and the National Theatre of Ghana in Ama Ata Aidoo’s classic play about the legacy of slavery: The Dilemma of a Ghost.

Passions explode when cultures collide in 21st century Africa. When African-American Eulalie marries Ato, the sensitive and intelligent Ghanaian student she meets at university, she dreams that they will be “the sweetest and loveliest things in Africa and America rolled together”. But when he brings her to Africa, the ghosts of the slave trade return to haunt the golden couple.

Modern beliefs mix uneasily with ancient values in this vital and potent production, which uses music, dance and sheer physical exuberance to celebrate 50 years of Ghana’s independence and 200 years since the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act.

This extraordinary event will be staged in London within the shell of the Africa Centre building in Covent Garden, and at David Adjaye’s stunning new Bernie Grant Arts Centre in Tottenham, as well as touring to Plymouth, Leeds, Hull, Slough, Leicester and Birmingham. See bordercrossings.org.uk for full details, show times and booking information.

Vibrant, pulsating African theatre by Ama Ata Aidoo: winner of the Nelson Mandela Prize.
