THE GRAND UNION BAND
CAN’T CHAIN UP ME MIND

Thursday 8 November to Friday 9 November
The Vortex Jazz Club, London

020 7254 4097 / www.vortexjazz.co.uk

Can’t Chain Up Me Mind features an all-star 12-piece band, the Grand Union Orchestra’s finest African, Caribbean and Latin-American musicians and jazz soloists, including Claude Deppa and Byron Wallen (trumpets), Tony Kofi and Louise Elliott (saxophones), Josefina Cupido (Latin percussion, voice), Brian Abrahams (drums, voice) and Bravo Fimber (steel pans).

A New Orleans funeral, Yoruba chants invoking ancient spirits, the rhythms of modern Cuba, more than a touch of the blues, songs of anger and defiance, seductive Latin melody, calypso and reggae – all blend into a flowing sequence of songs and stunning improvisation, to create a vivid picture of slavery and the music it gave birth to in the New World.

“glorious and inspirational music” – All About Jazz.

Music by Tony Haynes. Lyrics by Valerie Bloom, John Matshikiza.

The Grand Union Band will also be performing Can’t Chain Up Me Mind at Darlington Civic Theatre on Saturday 29 September and Cambridge Corn Exchange on Thursday 22 November, part of a tour that began in August.
