WHERE HAVE ALL THE PANTHERS GONE?
Friday 23 November, 7.30pm
Notting Hill Arts Club
020 7629 5555 / www.nottinghillartsclub.com
A musical, visual and spoken word elegy to a movement that seems to have disappeared and been forgotten. A piece that taps into the elements and the forces that were instrumental in forging and carrying the movement’s message of emancipation.
The Music: jazz, soul, funk, afro beat, township, reggae and Tropicalismo. The Word & the Lyrics of defiance: the speeches of Huey Newton, Bobby Seale, Angela Davis, Malcom X and Stokely Carmichael; the prison letters of George Jackson; spoken word and drama from Leroi Jones and the Last Poets.
The Message that carried across the globe, that caught the revolutionary vibe of their time, that galvanised the people of African diaspora, from the US to the UK, Kingston JA to Jo’burg S.A. A message whose echoes continue to resound, whose ripples continue to spread.
Featuring new contributions from The Shrine Synchrosystem (Rita Ray & Max Reinhardt & Kelly Budge of Your Mum Visuals) plus poets/vocalists/musicians & archive audio and visuals.
